U.S. to Adjust Frontline Troops in S.Korea

June 2, 2003

SEOUL (Reuters) - A planned overhaul of U.S. troops in South Korea will affect frontline forces which Seoul has sought to retain as a "tripwire" against a North Korean invasion, U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said on Monday.
"Any basic changes we make to our ground posture here will affect the 2nd Infantry Division," he told a news conference. Any changes involving the division -- which accounts for 14,000 of the 37,000 U.S. troops in the South -- would be made with an eye on enhancing readiness, not diminishing it, Wolfowitz said.
