Briefcase Bombs Found In Carmel, Pebble Beach
Second Bomb Found Near Charles Schwab's Home
August 18, 2003
CARMEL, Calif. -- Two briefcase bombs were found on the Central Coast Monday, and the head of a well-known brokerage firm might be the target.
The Monterey County Sheriff Department confirmed Monday that the first bomb was found at the Clocktower Place office building in Carmel, where the offices of Charles Schwab are located. The second bomb was found on Live Oak Meadow near Whitman Lane in Pebble Beach, where Charles Schwab lives.
The device found outside the Clocktower Place office was successfully disabled by bomb technicians, according to Monterey County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Donna Galletti.
"There was some type of explosive device, but it did not detonate," Galletti said.
The second briefcase forced the closure of two holes of the famed Pebble Beach golf course while authorities investigated, Galletti said.
No injuries were reported in connection with the Clocktower Place incident, but the surrounding buildings were evacuated beginning at 7:30 a.m. when both incidents were first reported, Galletti said.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department bomb squad is assisting Monterey County authorities with both incidents.
