Beijing, China, (UPI) -- An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck the city of Baoshan in southwestern China's Yunnan province, injuring 12, local media said Wednesday.

The quake hit shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, damaging over 20,000 homes and leaving 12 people injured, including one victim in critical condition, according to state-run Xinhua.

Relief efforts were underway by evening, with tents provided to those made homeless by the earthquake and repairs made to road and telecommunication networks.

The epicenter was located in a town called Hanzhuang, approximately five miles from downtown Baoshan, a densely populated city. Baoshan is about 70 miles from the Myanmar (Burma) border in a mountainous part of western Yunnan.
