Power Outage Leaves Logan Airport Terminal in the Dark

July 5, 2004

BOSTON -- Dozens of flights were delayed Monday after a problem with two electric substations put a terminal at Logan International Airport in the dark for five hours.

The outage shut down security screening systems, the equipment used to process passengers and luggage, as well as elevators and escalators in Terminal E, according to Phil Orlandella, spokesman for the Massachusetts Port Authority.

Power went out at 2:12 p.m. and was fully restored at 7:10 p.m., causing delays for 15 international flights and 13 domestic flights, he said.

The Transportation Security Administration had to screen passengers and checked luggage by hand before power was restored, Orlandella said. The cause of the outage was under investigation by NSTAR.
