Crews Work to Complete Fix of Power Outage

July 21, 2004

HARTFORD -- Investigators do not yet know what caused Tuesday night's blackout in Hartford, or the underground explosion that preceded it.

The blast blew off a manhole cover around 10:30 last night, near Ford and Pearl streets in the central business district.

All but one of the 7,000 customers who were in the dark last night are back up and running. The exception is the Mass Mutual building which is closed today.

To get the power back on crews used the temporary system to bypass the problem, they will spend the afternoon making their repairs permanent..

During the overnight hours crews managed to bypass the trouble spot and get the life back up downtown..

The morning hours were used working on a more permanent solution, first by cleaning up the manholes and then by laying new wires to replace the stretch that was damaged.
