Fiber-Optic Cable Cut Disrupts Services

July 22, 2004

A fiber-optic cable cut in western South Dakota is disrupting some cell phones and electronic transactions today.

The cable was cut about 11:30 this morning, and officials from the Public Utilities Commission say cell phones and automated teller machines have had interruptions. Rapid City merchants say some credit card transactions have been affected.

The P.U.C. says it has been given no estimated time for fixing the outage. Qwest officials did not return a reporter's telephone call. Officials say problems have been reported in Rapid City, Belle Fourche, Spearfish, Sturgis, McIntosh, Ellsworth Air Force Base, and other areas.
