The Tesoro Petroleum Corp.'s Golden Eagle refinery in Martinez was hit by a gasoline storage tank fire early Thursday.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined but was initially linked to a possible failure of a pump seal, according to broadcast reports. The fire was apparently confined to the storage tank.
No injuries were reported. The fire began shortly before 3 a.m. and was under control within three hours.
The refinery is the largest of six operated by the San Antonio, Texas-based company. It has the capacity to process 168,000 barrels of petroleum daily. It converts crude oil into gasoline and diesel fuel that meets California Air Resources Board clean-burning fuel standards.
It's the fourth largest petroleum refinery in California by capacity. California has 13 gasoline refineries, according to the California Energy Commission.
It was not immediately determined how the fire might affect production at the plant.
