October 18, 2004

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- A problem with a power substation left some people in the Upper Peninsula's largest city and part of Marquette County without electricity service for as long as 12 hours, state police said Monday.

The outage was reported about 12:10 p.m. EDT, state police said in a news release. It affected Marquette Board of Light and Power customers in the city of Marquette, as well as Chocolay, Marquette, Negaunee, Skandia and Powell townships.

Board of Light and Power crews worked Sunday afternoon to restore service to Marquette, which has a population of about 20,000, and the nearby townships.

The last of the customers regained their service about 12:45 a.m. Monday, said state police Sgt. Brian Graustein.
