An electrical transmission line caught fire at a Consolidated Edison power station in Lower Manhattan early Wednesday, officials said. No injuries or outages were reported.
The line, which feeds power into electrical equipment, was at a Con Ed power station on East 14th Street at Avenue C, burst into flames at about 3:26 a.m.
The fire burned for several hours as firefighters waited for Con Ed to ground the transformer before applying flame-dousing foam, said Firefighter Brian Tobin, a Fire Department spokesman.
The flames were extinguished by 5:50 a.m. and the cause was under investigation, said D. Joy Faber, a Con Ed spokeswoman. She said there were no power outages or injuries.
In July 2002, a transformer at the same plant exploded, cutting off power to about 63,000 customers for seven hours. The explosion was blamed on a short circuit.
