DTE Starts to Shut Mich. Fermi 2 Nuke

August 9, 2004

NEW YORK, Aug 9 (Reuters) - DTE Energy Co. started to shut its 1,130 megawatt Fermi 2 nuclear unit in Michigan late Sunday due to the failure of an emergency diesel generator, the company told the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in an event report.

The diesel generator was removed from service on Aug. 2 for scheduled maintenance. Since repairs will not be completed within the seven-day technical requirement, DTE was required to shut the plant.

A spokesman for the Detroit-based energy company could not immediately comment on the status of the plant early Monday. According to an NRC report earlier Monday, the unit was operating at 40 percent of capacity, down from full power on Friday.

One megawatt powers about 1,000 homes, according to the national average.

The station is located in Newport, Michigan, about 25 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio.
