Explosive Devices Found Under Tarentum Bridge
No Injuries Reported

POSTED: 2:00 pm EDT June 8, 2004

TARENTUM, Pa. -- The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called to the Tarentum Bridge around 8 p.m. Monday after explosive devices were found.

A boater told investigators he found a suspicious item in the mud off the banks of the Allegheny River.

Tarentum police said they found four pipe bombs and components to make an explosive device.

However, the pieces were not assembled.

The device caused quite a scare for boaters.

Boater Renee Crynack said, "We started to pull into the launch ramp and a man started screaming at us at the top of his lungs to get away from the marina -- to get away, back up (and) move. (They) wouldn‚t let us out."

Right now, police don‚t believe the bridge was a target.

No arrests have been made.

Tooele Team Called to Diffuse Idaho Bomb
Jun. 8, 2004

(Idaho Falls, Idaho-AP) -- About 20 homes on the south side of Idaho Falls have been evacuated for what police say appears to be a pipe bomb laying in a street.

Sergeant Steve Hunt says an explosive ordinance team has been called in from Tooele, Utah to disarm or detonate the device.

Police on the scene say it's a metal pipe about 18 inches long and two inches in diameter. It was found laying on Saint Clair Road in a rural neighborhood. The closest house is about 60 yards away.

Hunt says the streets are blocked off and people have either left their homes or agreed to stay inside.

The bomb squad is expected to arrive sometime before noon.

No threats were called in and Hunt says officers don't have any information about where the device may have come from.

Explosion Probe Continues In Northeast Baltimore
Feds Stop Short Of Confirming Pipe Bomb Explosion

POSTED: 10:04 am EDT June 8, 2004
UPDATED: 6:46 pm EDT June 8, 2004

BALTIMORE -- Federal agents are stopping short of confirming that a pipe bomb caused an explosion Tuesday morning in northeast Baltimore.

Kelly Long, an agent of the federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agency, said the explosion is still under investigation. Baltimore City police earlier said a pipe bomb was to blame.

The blast happened about 5:30 a.m. in the 3200 block of Taylor Avenue -- damaging a 1994 Ford Ranger sport utility vehicle, WBAL-TV 11 News Rob Roblin reported. No one was hurt.

"It was just one tremendous sound and it was like a bomb," one witness told 11 News.

Neighbors blocks away told 11 News they could hear the explosion and described the sound as a bomb or a major car accident.

Taylor Avenue remains closed into the afternoon as agents conduct a "grid search" for evidence around the scene.

ATF crews transported the vehicle after 5 p.m. to, according to Long, the ATF's national laboratory for further investigation.

"The chemists will work through the vehicle and look for more evidence, look for fingerprints and look for any type of explosive device," Long said.

Long also told 11 News that investigators aren't looking only at the car itself, but they are combing its surrounding areas.

The FBI, Baltimore City police and the arson squad also assisted at the scene Tuesday morning.

Pipe bomb explodes at Taconic High School
6/9/2004 11:10 AM
By: Capital News 9 web staff

An explosion earlier this morning has blown out a window at Taconic High School in Pittsfield.

Police said that shortly after 7 a.m., a plastic trash barrel at the back entrance to the school blew up.

Students were starting to arrive at the time of the explosion, but no one was hurt.

Sgt. Mark Bushey of the Pittsfield Police Department said, "It appears that it was inside of a blue trash receptacle, and therefore when it went off, it went up. The pressure and what not blew up and not out, which was a good thing."

The school was not evacuated, but the area around the entrance has been closed off. Members of the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad have been called in to help with the investigation.

'Bomb' found at outlet center
Mystery device in soda machine is safely defused

Tulare firefighters and police officers and Tulare County Sheriff's Department bomb-squad members respond Monday to a call about a possible explosive device at the Horizon Outlet Center.

The discovery of what appeared to be an explosive device in a Horizon Outlet Factory Center soda machine prompted authorities to shut down several stores for two hours Monday afternoon.

Police said the device, described as a metal pipe with a fuse, tumbled out of the machine after a thirsty shopper attempted to purchase a soda. Tulare police Sgt. Ruben Morales said it's unknown how long the device, disassembled by the Tulare County Sheriff's Department bomb squad, had been in the machine.

As a precaution, authorities placed yellow tape around all 12 soda machines at the outlet center and closed at least a dozen stores, including Reebok, Zales Jewelry and Dress Barn.

"We wanted to make sure everybody was safe," Tulare police Sgt. Bryan Moore said.

As police, firefighters and sheriff's deputies went to work, outlet employees gathered by the center's fountain or looked for shady spots. Shoppers, however, seemed unfazed by the goings on or the presence of police, patronizing open businesses and, at times, walking alongside the police tape.

Horizon Outlet Center General Manager Patty Rocha said the shopper who discovered the device told a maintenance worker, who immediately alerted police.

"We follow procedure," she said.

Moore said the Sheriff's Department's bomb squad was called out to handle the device. The Fire Department kept an engine on scene.

Morales it's unknown at this point whether the device was capable of exploding. Bomb-squad officials will prepare a report for the Police Department, he said.

"We're going to handle this investigation as if it was a bomb, whether it was or not," he said.
