Imagine that. I wrote a chapter on WMD way back in 1992

Ezekiel Chapters 38 and 39 describe a military debacle unequaled in recorded human history. Ezekiel 39 is particularly detailed on the nature of Gog's desert defeat. As a former U.S. Army Medic stationed with a tank battalion in Baumholder, Germany from 1973-75, I can offer some grim insights into this military disaster. Based upon the behavior of the people in Ezekiel 39, it's my personal opinion Ezekiel is describing decontamination techniques after biological, chemical or nuclear warfare. An earthquake caused chemical reaction is what I believe is the most likely cause.

There is no doubt in my mind people will start throwing around Chemical tipped Scuds, biological bombs and limited numbers of tactical nuclear weapons. Having taken great efforts to confirm Ezekiel's prophetic ministry, I can't even pray he messed up Chapter thirty nine. Personally, I can only identify with the character Charlton Heston played in "Planet of the Apes." What he said when he sees the Statue of Liberty buried in the sand is what I feel. We knew better, but we did it anyway. You know, original sin and all that inhibition stuff. We used to call things sinful; now we just say we're releasing our inner child. If you ask me, we would be better off suppressing the little brat.

The following section could be called "Everything you don't want to know about Biological, Chemical and Nuclear Warfare." The reason I know so much about this stuff is because it was one of my jobs to give atropine injections to soldiers. I never actually did, thank God, but the training was still given.1 The other reason is I grew up a mere thirty miles from the Hanford Nuclear complex, where Project Manhattan made the plutonium for the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. I still have roots in the area, although I hope they are not radioactive.

BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL AND INCENDIARY WARFARE

Biological and Chemical Warfare should be seen as flip sides of the same coin. They may use the same delivery systems, as well as being used in sequence and employing many of the same terms. Specifically, biological, or germ, warfare is the use of biological agents and toxins, disease causing viruses and bacteria, to kill. These agents may be altered and increased in virulence(strength) beyond normal many times. Some of the more common ones are: Bubonic Plague and Anthrax. Biological warfare is really the selected application of disease, a disease bomb, under combat conditions.

One way biological toxins are released is in the aerosol droplets from an explosive air burst. The toxins would then be absorbed either by breathing, or through osmosis(absorption) on exposed skin. Another method would be contamination of food and water supplies, with ingestion by eating and drinking. Biological toxins kill quickly. The first type, nerve toxins, destroy the central nervous system's ability to function. This leads to rapid suffocation from the lung's collapse and general respiratory failure. The second way is choking on blood and sputum as the body reacts to the toxin. For instance, Anthrax is a cattle disease which, when introduced into the human body, causes a violent and fatal reaction.

Chemical warfare is simply the use of specific chemical compounds in combat. The U.S. Army classifies Chemical Agents as either nerve, blister, blood or choking agents. Chemical Nerve agents attack the central nervous system, what is popularly called nerve gas. Nerve agent is a specific term applying to chemical warfare. A chemical nerve agent is a lethal, colorless and odorless organic compound, usually GB or VX. Nerve gas refers to the method of attack, via the respiratory system through breathing, and the target, the central nervous system's control of breathing functions. Other chemical nerve agents are the Psychochemicals designed to mentally incapacitate troops, the combat troops on LSD syndrome my officers were obsessed with.

Nerve toxin is also a specific term applying to biological or germ warfare. The confusion enters because a "nerve gas" may be an aerosol of either a chemical compound or toxic germs. The nerve gas cloud will attack unprotected people's central nervous system and cause them to exhibit similar symptoms and effects. Still, I don't wish to overly confuse you and bury you in precise technical mumbo jumbo. I remember very vividly an army film on what happens to a rat breathing a chemical nerve gas. I'll leave it at that.

Blister agents are named for the painful blisters formed on unprotected skin after exposure to a gas cloud. The blood agents are a cyanide gas cloud which, when breathed, destroys the brain's respiratory centers. Choking agents are the non lethal tear gases used in riot control. The most common is Phosgene.
Chemical agents are very effective in the gaseous form against anyone not wearing a gas mask. Breathing the toxic and caustic fumes can cause serious and rapid damage to the mucus membrane lining of the respiratory system. The combat effectiveness of this was proved in World War One, causing many thousands of dead and wounded on all sides. Even Adolf Hitler spent time recovering from a gas attack.2 Blister agents were also widely used during the Iran\Iraq war as late as 1988. The most common blister agent is called Mustard Gas, due to its sickly yellow color. Death is caused by the throat and bronchial tubes swelling shut. Many victims are later killed by bacteria and viruses which attack their ravaged bodies.

Chemical agents can also burn exposed skin and cause extensive burns. In the case of white phosphorous, sparks can set clothing aflame. Phosphorous also burns very hot, can burn to the bone and is very difficult to put out.3 This fact makes White Phosphorous very effective in combat, especially against troops in the field. It's effect on the unprotected populations of urban centers is even worse.

The aerial bombing raids against Hamburg, Germany are an example of what even regular incendiary bombs can do under the right weather conditions. Hamburg was bombed over a four day period by Allied bombers during July, 1943. The combination of the July heat and the incendiary bombing raids created the critical mass for a firestorm. The resulting firestorm killed thirty thousand Germans.4

All three of these types of warfare, biological, chemical and incendiary, can be used by similar delivery systems. For safety reasons NATO forces use biological nerve toxins and chemical nerve gases in binary systems. This means they are stored in separate compartments and mixed during the shell or bomb explosion. Artillery shells, cruise missiles, aircraft bombs and other types of missiles can be used. The scenes from Israel of the Scud attacks during the Gulf War, the sealed rooms and gas masks, confirm the point.

TACTICAL VERSUS STRATEGIC NUCLEAR WARFARE

The use of tactical nuclear weapons is a certainty during Gog's invasion. Tactical weapons have a limited range and a relatively low destructive power. The last statement is merely a reflection on how big the hole created is. Tactical weapons include nuclear tipped artillery shells, depth charges, cruise missiles and other limited range missiles( under 1000 miles), plus small aircraft bombs. Hiroshima's bomb would be considered a modern tactical nuclear weapon.

Soviet military doctrine allows field commanders to make the decision on whether to use biological, chemical or tactical nuclear weapons. Strategic weapons are, or were, kept under tight central command and control in the old U.S.S.R. Tactical nuclear weapons were dispersed widely at the brigade and battalion level. This allowed individual field commanders much greater freedom than would ever be tolerated in a U.S. unit.5 It's this lower level of nuclear weapons which are finding their way to the cash rich Islamic Republics.

Strategic nuclear weapons are what we usually think about as nuclear weapons. Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles(ICBM's) hurtling towards the world's cities, mushroom clouds forming in what we call a nuclear exchange, this is the classical reading of Ezekiel. Ezekiel's comments about fire on the coastlands and Magog have been taken as absolute confirmation of massive global first strikes. First, there is no evidence at all to indicate fifty thousand warheads are used. Second, all that is mentioned is a great earthquake and not the destruction of life on planet Earth. The obvious question of who is doing the decontamination techniques is a good starter. The evidence indicates the use of tactical nuclear weapons in numbers capable of causing local contamination. It's pretty simplistic to believe Gog simply pushes a button and launches Russia's 30,000 nuclear warheads.6 Gog is trying to liberate Jerusalem, not make it into a big hole. Ezekiel mentions plague, biological warfare, and a great earthquake which destroys Gog's army. Ezekiel plainly states Gog's army is totally wiped out by this earthquake. We'll pursue this cut and dried statement by Ezekiel in more detail later on. For now, all we'll say is that a general exchange involving thousands of ICBM's is not what Ezekiel is talking about. There will be selective use of ICBM'S for specific targets and reasons. Again, the primary goal of Gog's Islamic Confederacy is the liberation of Jerusalem and the Mosque of the Dome. This should be kept in mind before we put words in Ezekiel's mouth.
