Russian General Dies in Drive-by Shooting

Smolensk, Russia, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A top officer in the Russian air force died Sunday evening after a drive-by shooting on a highway in the Smolensk region of Russia.

Major-General Konstantin Dementyev, deputy commander of long-range aviation, was killed when his car was raked by small-arms fire, BBC reported Monday. His driver was also killed in the attack, and a second passenger was wounded.

The Tass news agency reported that the general was traveling on the Minsk-Moscow highway, returning to Moscow from home leave in Belarus.

There have been no reports of a motivation for the killing.
