There are thousands of research and exploratory efforts planned many countries and geological as well as defense initiatives to drill through the earth’s crust into the mantel. Many in the world believe in doing do, unlimited natural resources especially for developing countries will be discovered. One of the main motives obviously is to see if the bottom part of the earth’s crust is full of oil and gas!
The problem is that uncontrolled drilling of earth’s crust by ant one and everyone will cause major problems. Earth’s crust is brittle and is in slow floatation over the soft moving mantel. Many portions of the earth’s crust and many pivotal points form massive load bearing structures. The bending loads are especially important in case where one plate moves under another plate. According to a computer model, if these drilling projects below the ocean and sometimes on the continental crust are continued, it will cause in many cases complete destruction of the crust in some areas. Think about trying to drill many holes in some broken glass plates floating on some thick fluid.
That is exactly what some geologists, oil and gas explorers and many Government agencies all over the world are planning to perform in the next five years. Some experts believe that this earth’s crust weakening experiments should be completely monitored by the United Nations and done sequentially controlled by computer models. Experimenting with earth’s crust without having technologies to escape to another planet is minimally unjustified.
There are other problems. Massive bending stress in a brittle plate is a problem itself. Now making bunch of uncontrolled holes in that plate can accelerate the bending failure. In other words, millions of us can be wiped out overnight because some other nations thousands of miles away made innumerable holes in the same plate we share with them.
Fortunately, the human civilization never faced these problems because the drills were not strong enough to operate at high temperatures near the mantel. But now with advanced materials technologies especially nano-manufacturing, these drills are available and can be deployed to drill the earth all over the places.
Many believe something devastating will happen in 2012 influenced by external forces. But most likely our human civilization is unknowingly racing towards self-destruction!
