State Duma Deputy Sergei Abeltsev, a member of Vladimir Zhirinovsky’s Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), has suggested that former Russian atomic energy minister Yevgeny Adamov, detained in Switzerland earlier this month, should be abducted from a detention center or killed.
If Russian authorities are unable to force Bern to release Adamov, he should be killed so that he does not reveal Russia’s state secrets, Abeltsev was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying at a Duma session.
Yevgeny Adamov was detained at the request of the United States on May 2 and charged with converting at least $9 million in funds earmarked for nuclear safety projects in Russia into personal assets. According to the indictment, he and a former Westinghouse Electric Corp. nuclear power plant engineer Mark Kaushansky are accused of transferring stolen money and securities, money laundering, tax evasion and conspiracy to defraud the United States by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh. If deported to the United States and convicted of the charges, Adamov may face a possible sentence of 60 years.
He was a minister under Russian President Boris Yeltsin but was ousted by Vladimir Putin, who came to power in 2000 vowing to fight corruption. Adamov was removed from his position after a probe into his ties to Russian businessmen.
