Two Four Star Generals Write New York Times Op-ed Against NDAA and Indefinite Detention of Americans: Two four star Marine generals have written a stunning op-ed in the New York Times which demands that President Obama veto the National Defense Authorization Act, a bill that allows the government to use the military to indefinitely detain American citizens without due process. Charles C. Krulak and Joseph P. Hoar, both 4 star Marine generals, published the piece on December 12. The op-ed starts with a direct demand that President Obama veto the NDAA bill in order to protect our country from the “false choice between our safety and ideals.” more

Alaska’s Cleveland Volcano Erupts By Unleashing 15,000 Ft. Ash Cloud: An ash cloud erupted some 15,000 feet into the air from Alaska’s Cleveland Volcano, according to satellite images and the Alaska Volcano Observatory. The volcano, located in the Aleutian Islands about 45 miles west of the community of Nikolski, has been upgraded and downgraded several times over the last few months, flaring up in July and erupting in the form of a growing lava dome in August. Following several weeks of activity, the volcano was downgraded before being upgraded again to an alert level of “watch” and an aviation hazard color-code of “orange” in early September. Two months later, the alert level was again lowered after the volcano seemed to quiet down. more

Why We Must Stop SOPA: Right now, there are two pieces of legislation in Congress that would change the Internet forever if they are enacted. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) would give the federal government the ability to potentially shut down millions of websites. SOPA (the version being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives) is the more dangerous of the two. It would essentially be the equivalent of a nuclear bomb being dropped on the Internet. It would give government officials unlimited power to very rapidly shut down any website that is found to "engage in, enable or facilitate" copyright infringement. China And Japan Plan Direct Currency Exchange Agreement: The deal will allow firms to convert the Chinese and Japanese currencies directly into each other. Currently businesses in both countries need to buy US dollars before converting them into the desired currency, adding extra costs. It is the latest step by China as it seeks a more global role for the yuan. "Given the huge size of the trade volume between Asia's two biggest economies, this agreement is much more significant than any other pacts China has signed with other nations," Ren Xianfang of IHS Global Insight was quoted as saying by the Bloomberg news agency. more

New Bill Authorizes Rendition of American Citizens Living within the United States to Other Countries for Torture: A defense spending bill that passed both houses of Congress overwhelmingly and is set to be signed by President Barack Obama as early as this week could make it easier for the government to transfer American terrorist suspects to foreign regimes and security forces. Congress Authorizes Pentagon to Wage Internet War: The ancient art of war is coming to the internet. The House and Senate agreed to give the U.S. military the power to conduct “offensive” strikes online — including clandestine attacks, via a little-noticed provision in the military’s 2012 funding bill. Obama to Slash National Guard Force on U.S.-Mexico Border: Citing budget cuts, the Obama administration early next year will cut the number of National Guard troops patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border by at least half, according to a congressman who was briefed on the plan. The National Guard said an announcement will be made by the White House “in the near future,” but Rep. Papua New Guinea Rattled By 7.3 Earthquake: A 7.3 magnitude earthquake has hit Papua New Guinea. A spokesman from Geoscience Australia confirmed the earthquake had occurred on land north of Port Moresby. Geoscience Australia's website said the quake could be felt by people 1,523 kilometres away. It says damage may have occurred within a 122-kilometre radius. Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Clive Collins told AAP aftershocks were expected, given the size of the earthquake. more
Number of Larger Earthquakes Are Rising: This recent Fox News/Live Science story says bigger quakes are NOT on the rise and that larger quakes don't trigger events on the opposite side of the planet. Stan Deyo and other scientists who have studied the occurrence of antipodal quakes – temblors striking the opposite side of the globe – find that the largest shakes – ones Stan calls 'bell ringers' – do sometimes trigger these events. Alarmingly, not only did 2010/2011 exceed ALL of the norms for larger events, but the largest quakes, Richters 6, 7 and 8 - 9.9 gained significantly over 2008/2009. Japan Megaquake Shifted Gravity Satellite Orbits: The Tohoku earthquake that rattled Japan on 11 March changed Earth's gravitational field enough to affect the orbits of satellites. The satellites' altered courses suggest that the earthquake was stronger and deeper than instruments on Earth indicated. These weren't just any satellites: they are the twin spacecraft of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), which fly 220 kilometres apart in a polar orbit about 500 kilometres above Earth. GRACE's job is to map the Earth's gravity field, and it does this by monitoring the effect of minute variations in the field on the trajectories of the satellites and the changing distance between them. more

Report: Syria Arms Missiles With Chemical Warheads: The Syrian regime, which has endured nine months of civil unrest spurred by the Arab Spring as it swept across the Middle East, has armed its medium-range missile arsenal with chemical warheads. According to a report published by the Sabah daily Sunday, Damascus armed 600 one-ton chemical warheads to use in the event of a foreign military intervention. Thousands Flee From Spice Isle Eruption: A volcano eruption in eastern Indonesia has forced thousands of residents to flee the area to avoid choking smoke. Mount Gamalama on the island of Ternate has spewed smoke and ash for days, but increased activity has forced the hurried evacuation of islanders. They are, in our view, actively encouraging such unrest (so as to be able to shape it) but also, at the same time, they are suppressing unrest and seek to create further law enforcement bodies and quasi-military groups to ensure that civil unrest does not spread unchecked. Europe Bailout News: Is the World Spinning Out of Control? More Europe bailout news. Last week, the world was elated with news that the Federal Reserve and five other central banks got together to prop up Eurozone banks drowning on sour sovereign debt, but the crisis is far from over. According to the latest rumors, scientists at the LHC are seeing a signal that could correspond to a Higgs particle with a mass of 125 GeV (a proton is slightly less than 1 GeV). Public talks are scheduled to discuss the latest results from ATLAS and CMS, two of the main LHC experiments, on Dec. 13.
