Swimming Ban at All Chicago Beaches
Due to E-Coli

Officials Blame Contamination On Heat, No Wind

July 24, 2002

CHICAGO -- Reacting to a high level of bacteria in the water, Park District officials said Tuesday afternoon that a ban on swimming remained in effect at most Lake Michigan beaches until at least mid-morning Wednesday, when new test results are available.

Park officials said the combination of hot and humid conditions with no wind contributed to an E-Coli problem along the entire Chicago lakeshore.

The only public beach where there is no ban is not at the lakefront but at Humboldt Park, 1440 N. Sacramento Ave.

Although a swimming ban is in effect, park district officials reminded people that the beach is still open to play volleyball, take a walk, read a book, visit the concessions, rent a bike, enjoy a picnic, and relax with friends.

In addition to the Lakefront Beaches, the Chicago Park District offers 55 Outdoor Pools and 24 Water Playground/Spray Pools located throughout the city.
