Miles of Dead Fish Mysteriously Wash Up On Florida Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Environmentalists in New Smyrna Beach are trying to determine why thousands of dead fish have washed up on a two-mile stretch of beach, according to Local 6 News.

The dead fish started washing up late Monday and were washed up along the coastline from East Crawford Avenue to 1400 Block of A1A.

Health officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission have been called to determine what killed the fish.

Beachergoers said that the fish have made the area smell like a fish market.

"I'm ready to go home," tourist Norm Holding said. "I've seen enough, it's just too smelly. I came down to enjoy the beach. I can't enjoy it with this."

Officials are not sure what would be the best way to clean the piles of fish. Clean up crews are thinking about using a turf-rake to gather the fish into a pile and then removing them in a truck, Local 6 News reported.

Beach patrol officials said that they're not sure if it's safe to go into the water, Local 6 News Tarik Minor reported.
