4.6-Magnitude Quake, Aftershocks in Orange Cty
September 3, 2002
YORBA LINDA, Calif. (AP) - A small earthquake followed by two dozen aftershocks rattled Southern California Tuesday, but apparently caused no injuries or damage.
The largest of the quakes, a magnitude-4.6, struck at 12:08 a.m., said Lucy Jones, scientist in charge of the U.S. Geological Survey office in Pasadena. The temblor was located three miles north of Yorba Linda, but was felt throughout the greater Los Angeles region and as far north as Victorville.
"It seemed like it was a big jar and then it rolled a little bit," said Charlie Flores, a Brea Police Department employee who was awakened at her Fullerton home by the quake.
The earthquake took place in an active quake zone along a strike-slip fault near the Whittier fault, Jones said.
About two dozen small aftershocks struck after the largest temblor, including a magnitude-2.9 that hit at 12:15 a.m., Jones said. The aftershocks tapered off by 7:18 a.m., but more could strike, U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough said.
There were no reports of damage or injury, according to Brea police, who provide service to Yorba Linda.
Yorba Linda is about 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
