China Establishes Spy Base on Central Pacific island

China has concluded an agreement with the government of Kiribati in the central Pacific Ocean for a intelligence-gathering facility on the island, according to intelligence sources.
The Chinese intelligence gathering facility is located on the southeastern end of the Tarawa atoll and is focused on gathering signals intelligence on the U.S. Army missile test range on the Marshall Islands located to the north of the Chinese base.
