Blast Kills 1, Injures At Least 28 In Israeli City

May 19, 2002

NETANYA, Israel (CNN) -- An explosion Sunday in a market in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya killed one person and wounded at least 28, Israeli medical sources said.

The blast was reported about 4:15 p.m. local time (9:15 a.m. EDT). The open air market is at the entrance to the city.

Netanya was the site of a suicide bombing that killed 29 Israelis on the eve of the Passover holiday in late March.

That terror attack triggered the five-week Israeli military operation to root out what Israel called the "terrorist infrastructure" in the Palestinian territories.

Israel claimed to have killed the man it blamed for the Passover bombing in an April 5 helicopter raid in the West Bank.
