Thailand Terror Target

An MI6-CIA team, supported by US Special Forces, has arrived in Thailand to hunt an Al-Quaeda unit feared to be planning a Bali-style massacre in the country.

The British Embassy in Bangkok calls the threat "significant" to winter-sun seeking British tourists.

After wide publicity that the garish resort of Phuket would be the target, intelligence sources now fear that the country's deluxe hotels - some of the finest in the Pacific - are now a prime target.

And Bangkok's international schools - their classrooms filled with the children of diplomats and members of the Thai Royal Family - are also on the target list.

The terrorists, said to number eight, were tracked from their hideouts in the Philippine jungles to Malaysia.

Using trails established by the drug barons of the "Golden Triangle", the terrorists headed north and are believed to have crossed over into Thailand a week ago.

Their presence triggered a world-wide alert that the target was Phuket. With its garish night clubs, nubile Thai girls and cheap drink, the resort is a mecca for back-packing tourists.

But British Embassy officials in Bangkok say the publicity about Phuket may well have played into the terrorist hands.

"A 'spectacular' could really be intended to hit a deluxe hotel in Bangkok or devastate the city's business centre", admitted an official.

While Thailand gets around 10 million visitors a year, the British Embassy fears the target could be any of the 600,000 Britons who annually visit the country.

Both MI6 and the CIA have tried to beef-up Thailand's internal security service in the past months.

"But the problem is that the Thai government does not want to drive away its lucrative tourist market", said an intelligence source in Bangkok.

Currently there are some 20,000 British tourists in Thailand - attracted by its lotus-leaf lifestyle. But it is one matched by lax security within the country.

Security is only stringent at airports - to detect "mules" smuggling drugs out of Thailand.
