CHINA, EGYPT SIGN MILITARY ACCORD

April 30, 2002

Egypt and China have signed an agreement to cooperate in the development of military technology.

The two countries signed three agreements on Saturday during the visit by Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji. The accords include cooperation meant to pave the way for joint ventures in a range of fields.

Arab diplomatic sources said the agreement included the transfer of Chinese technology for joint ventures in defense systems. This could result in the licensed production of Chinese weapons in Egypt.

The official Middle East News Agency said the state ministers for military production met last week to discuss products. No details were disclosed but the sources said the two countries discussed the prospect of joint aviation projects.
