Everything You Need to Know about Syria
BY DOUG MCINTOSH 3-14-2012
I’m afraid that what we think of as the “2003 Iraqi War,” was really just the last war there going back some 8,000 years. They started fighting with spears and swords, and ended up using cluster bombs. Bearing all of the above in mind, I will now explain how Syria came to be in the distress it now finds itself in. The brief answer is everybody wanted a chunk of Syria. The result being Syria now best resembles a chunk of meat being fought over by a pack of jackals. I have pointed out the long history of the Middle East and how it overshadows everything that happens there. I have also pointed out how Islam is also a defining factor in the Middle East. Further, I pointed out how the Ottoman Empire, and the end of World One define Syria. The key dates for Syria, at least in the last 100 years, are 1917, 2011, 2015, and 2018.
The reason I say 1917 is that is the year British General Allenby conquered the Ottoman Empire. The collapse of the Ottoman Empire led to a multitude of issues that define the Middle Eastern reality we deal with on a daily basis. In terms of Syria, the French and the British, the victors, the colonial victors, of World War One created a carving up of the Arab world that is, in my opinion, brazen in its insolence, cynical in its propaganda, and amoral in its opportunism. Actually, the “secret agreement,” was done in May of 1916. It also included the Russians, but they had a revolution so were denied the Arab pie being cut up by the Colonial powers. Ergo, if you want to understand the Middle East today, the you absolutely have to understand the Sykes-Picot 1916 treaty. The final result of this fine example of colonial shenanigans was France got Syria, and Britain pretty much got everything else. I mean the impact of this treaty just keeps going and going: it is the diplomatic version of the energizer bunny. It just keeps causing chaos, and then more chaos, and some more. For example, if you want to understand Desert Storm, or the 1991 Iraq/Kuwait war, you need to realize the only reason Kuwait existed to be invaded was the Sykes/Picot treaty. If you want more detailed information on this treaty you can use this link here. I am talking about direct French and British rule of various Arab countries. I am talking about “spheres of influence,” for France, Britain, and the allied powers. The fatal flaw of this treaty was, in my opinion, it failed to understand the geographical, ethnic, religious and tribal divisions inside the various countries created with a wave of the wand in 1917.
At any rate, Syria become either directly ruled by France, or part of the French “sphere of influence.” Eventually, Syria had a revolution, much like Algeria did, and French rule was replaced by the Assad family. I am leaving a lot out of this cliff notes version; namely, the British invasion in 1941 to get rid of the Vichy French Government running Syria, as well as the 1958 merger with Egypt’s Nasser that lasted till 1961, followed by 9 years of increasing chaos. The Assad family came to power in 1970, and has stayed in power ever since. And that, dear readers, is the cliff notes version to how Syria got into the current mess.
SYRIA AND 2011’S ARAB SPRING
I happen to think the world is ruled by a core group of 300 families. You can call them what you like, and believe in them or not. I find this 300 family explanation to fit the evidence. The 300 spend some time fighting amongst themselves, crushing any potential opposition, and in general, just messing with the world, its people, and trying to become the most powerful, richest people they can be. It is a game of Risk, or Monopoly with real players, and real assets. After “they” had unleashed the Arab Spring, conquered Libya, Ukraine, thrown Egypt into chaos they took their shot at Syria. I mean “they” used their Deep State proxies to create the Free Syrian Army, or other proxy forces used to fight Assad junior and take over Syria. This process went on from 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and was pretty much about to smash Assad junior’s head in when three things happened. Here are three things that “they” got blind-sided by. I think these three things that have led to the current Syrian situation in 2018. The first thing was the trained CIA, or Deep State dog, ISIS, not only bit the hand that created it, but tried to use a chainsaw and cut it off. In August of 2014, ISIS exploded out of literally nowhere, or at least I never found any media coverage of the rise of ISIS. It was literally a case on one month ISIS was part of the “anti-Assad forces,” all nice and warm and fuzzy. The USA had been supporting them, as had NATO, and the EU because they were on “our” side, and they were really good guys who would kill Assad Junior and let the Deep State loot and pillage like they want to. Well, people ISIS turned the tables in the summer of 2014, and began one of the most impressive military offensives possible. The result was ISIS, who still wanted to overthrow Assad junior, which is why the CIA liked them. The CIA never twigged to the fact that ISIS wanted to replace Assad Junior. They just wanted all of Syria, and Iraq as their own private Caliphate. Of course, I like to say it would be run by a bunch of psycho, in my opinions, ISIS fruit cakes who like to burn Jordanian pilots alive, and would give Chingis Khan a run for his torture chamber.
Ergo, that leads to the second thing that happened, and the second reason Syria is the way it is in 2018. It took some time but everybody finally figured out the West needed to create this grand coalition and as, POTUS Trump put it so eloquently, “bomb the living #%$%%^^ out of ISIS.” I understand, agree and approve the sentiments. The result of that was the USA began to deploy serious military assets into Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan and Israel. In fact, we repeated the “find some good guys we can give Javelin anti-tank rockets to,” strategy. This time around the USA armed the various Kurdish groups, with much better results, and unleashed them on ISIS. Now, while all of the above was going on; namely, ISIS mutated from a “good anti-Assad junior group,” into something like the Black Death. While the USA and NATO were creating this “anti-ISIS coalition, which also was, by the way, still an Anti-Assad Junior coalition. The result was some confusion about whether it was better to bomb ISIS first, or Assad Junior first, or just bomb the #%%%% out of them all the time. The USA chose the latter tactic: bomb everybody, and bomb them all the time, and bomb them everywhere. This led to the strange situation where the US led “grand coalition” was bombing what were defined as ISIS forces, which were fighting the US backed Kurdish forces, who could be fighting the Assad Junior forces, who were, in turn possibly fighting Al Qaida anti-Assad junior forces, at least when they weren’t fighting ISIS. If you understand all of that, dear reader, I’m impressed. I’m impressed because I don’t understand it, and I just wrote it. And this is number 2.5 factor relevant to Syria. There are now so many individual players in Syria, engaged in so many actions, with so many different agendas, and supported by so many separate groups, I find it nearly impossible to keep track of them all. I will do the best I can, but I make no promises.
Next, we come to the third factor in the Syria of 2018. I did consider coming up with a fourth factor, but I decided to combine both parties into one situation. The third situation that blindsided the Deep State, the EU, the USA and a long list of anti-Assad junior forces was the entrance of Russian air combat units into the Syrian conflict on Assad Junior’s side. Further, this combat deployment was authorized by Vlad the Impaler, or Vladamir Putin, for the sole purpose of dealing with the military imperialism coming out of NATO, the EU and the USA. Putin saw what happened in Libya. Putin saw what happened in the Ukraine. Putin saw, got seriously annoyed and said Syria is mine. Putin thus completely frustrated the US NATO plan for the creation of a US NATO controlled Eastern Europe and Middle East. I am saying the third decisive factor of why Syria is now in the situation it is relates to foreign invasion, assistance and support. It is a fact that Russia intervened in Syria. It is a fact they saved Assad Junior’s rear end. It is a fact they have gutted ISIS in Syria. It is a fact they have completely frustrated both US and NATO plans for Syria. And finally, Russia has set the stage for Turkey’s invasion of Syria on January 20th, 2018. Putin simply declared victory over ISIS, had a parade and pulled most, not all, of his forces back to Russia, or at least to the new Armenian Air Base on the Turkish border. Putin plays chess; NATO and the US play Crazy Eights.
All of the above are the why, and the who, and the how we now have over 200,000 innocent Kurdish civillians trapped in Afrin, Syria. The Turks, under Erdogan, are very likely to massacre every Kurd now in Afrin. It is likely NATO, the US and Europe will stand by and watch. Perhaps some whining, and maybe some nasty diplomatic notes to Erdogan, but no way are we going to send in ground troops at this point.
